Spec2RunAI vs Tricentis Tosca: a model of the application or the test case as written.

Tricentis Tosca is one of the broadest enterprise test automation platforms on the market: model-based, codeless, covering mainframe to API, with agentic AI that builds tests from plain-language descriptions. Spec2RunAI is narrower on purpose: it runs the manual test case the tester already wrote, against the live screen, and returns an evidence report. The honest comparison is about scope and ownership, not features. We build Spec2RunAI, so weigh this accordingly; every statement about Tricentis Tosca is taken from tricentis.com on the date above and cited by number, and we say plainly where Tricentis Tosca is the better choice.

The difference, precisely

What the stored test is.

Tricentis Tosca: A Tosca TestCase built on a scanned model

Tricentis describes Tosca as combining “model-based testing, agentic AI, and unattended parallel execution on the cloud”1; Vision AI scans controls using “deep convolutional neural networks”2; and AI agents “generate complete, end-to-end tests from plain-language descriptions”1. When the system changes, “updates are quickly pushed to hundreds or thousands of test cases at once”1. Tosca Cloud’s import “only supports test cases from other Tosca Cloud workspaces”3. The stored test is a Tosca asset built on the model, and the model is what the team maintains.

Spec2RunAI: the tester’s wording, resolved at run time

Spec2RunAI stores the test case as the tester wrote it — business jargon, multi-action lines, expected results where the tester put them — and resolves each step against the live screen when the test runs. There is nothing to model, scan, or record first. Proven steps replay from selector memory without a model call. Autonomous Tuning may propose clearer wording for a step that drifted, shown beside the original, and the stored test changes only when a person approves it; the expected result never changes (Assertion Lock). The stored test remains a readable document that could run anywhere a person can read it.

Why this matters more than it sounds: a test that exists as a model, a recording, or a generated asset is maintained by people who know that tool, and it leaves with the tool. A test kept in the tester’s words is maintained by the tester, in a document that is also the UAT script, the audit evidence, and the requirement trace. Neither is wrong. They are different answers to who owns the suite.

Where Tricentis Tosca is the better choice

Breadth. Mainframe, API, native desktop, native mobile, and “200+ technologies”1 (a trial page says 160+14) from one tool; Spec2RunAI runs browser-delivered applications only. Model-based reuse at scale. Pushing one change to thousands of test cases1 is the right design for very large, engineering-owned suites. Certifications. SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001, ISO 27701, ISO 9001, and ISO/IEC 420019; we hold SOC 2 Type II. Free trial. A 14-day trial14; we ask for ten test cases. Twenty-plus years of enterprise history1.

Where Spec2RunAI is the better choice

Nothing to model. The manual test case is the test; there is no scan, no module, no repository to build before the first run. The people who wrote the tests keep owning them. Business analysts and manual testers, in their own words, with no Tosca Commander skills required. Sign-off evidence per run. Verification coverage per step, failures by cause, AI provenance appendix, PDF with signature lines. Assertion Lock. Healing may change how a step runs, never what it verifies. Insurance core systems tuned against live Insurity and Guidewire environments. Known cost. Published per-engagement pricing.

If you are leaving Tricentis Tosca

Keeping your test cases when you leave.

In Tosca, the test is a TestCase assembled from modules scanned from the application1,2, and Tosca Cloud’s own import accepts only Tosca Cloud workspaces3. When you leave, the modules and the model stay. What travels is the test’s intent: each TestCase was built to exercise a business process with expected outcomes, and that process can be written out in a few plain-English lines. Many teams already have those lines in qTest, Jira, or the original manual test cases the Tosca suite was built from. Spec2RunAI runs that document as written; the model is not needed.

Two things to do before any migration, whichever direction it goes: export the plain-language version of every test you want to keep, and run the verification coverage checker on it. Steps with no stated expected result cannot be verified by any tool, and a migration is the cheapest moment to add them.

Test the difference

An afternoon’s evaluation, for either tool.

Take ten of your real manual test cases, untouched. Give the same ten to both vendors. Then look at three things: the stored test afterward (is it still your document, or a translated one, and who will edit it?); a run report (how many steps had their expected result verified, and does the report say which did not?); and a deliberate break (rename a button, and read what each tool did and whether the expected result survived). Decide on what you see, not on what either of us says here.

Common questions

Quick answers.

Is Spec2RunAI a Tricentis Tosca alternative?

For web-delivered enterprise applications where the suite should be owned by the people who wrote the manual tests, yes. For mainframe, API, native desktop, or native mobile testing, or for very large engineering-owned suites that depend on model-based reuse, Tosca covers ground Spec2RunAI does not.

Does Tosca run existing manual test cases?

Tosca Cloud’s documented import accepts test cases from other Tosca Cloud workspaces. Import of Excel or Word test cases exists in Tricentis’s separate qTest product, for management rather than execution. We did not find a statement that Tosca executes manual test cases as written; ask Tricentis. Spec2RunAI does.

Which is cheaper?

Spec2RunAI publishes its price. Tricentis’s Tosca pricing page could not be loaded on the review date and no price appears on the pages we read, so a comparison needs a quote.

Both say “plain language.” What is the difference?

Tosca’s AI agents take a plain-language description and build a Tosca test from it, which then lives in the Tosca repository1. Spec2RunAI does not build anything from the description: the description is the test, stored unchanged, and resolved against the live screen at run time.
